Astitva is a sensitive voyage into the world of sensual relations between same sex individuals expressed through movement, voice, and music in a theatrical context. A recent presentation at The Place in London was well received by a pan representational cross section of preferences in the audience: whose choices and appreciations were expressed in various manners, from outright approval to tacit acceptance. As a theatre piece it was almost perfect: except it over indulged in semi explicit coupling movements, which detracted from the aesthetic values of the male pas de deux and pas de trois executed by Dominic Coffey, Amar Bains, and Mithun Gill. The piece lacks a deeper dramaturgical approach that is to say a true development of character and development of story and not just a foray into cross cultural tastes and sexual practices. The movescape and choreography by Jaivant Patel was charming and varied: providing ample opportunities for the interpreters to strut their stuff. Supported by an interesting soundscape by composer Alap Desai and excellent lighting design by K.J Lighting. Hopefully, future representatives will display welcome positive dramaturgic progress.

Astitva est un voyage sensible dans le monde des relations sensuelles entre personnes de même sexe exprimées par le mouvement, la voix et la musique dans un contexte théâtral. Une récente présentation au The Place à Londres a été bien accueillie par un éventail pan-représentatif de préférences dans le public : dont les choix et appréciations étaient exprimés de diverses manières, allant de l'approbation pure à l'acceptation tacite. En tant que pièce de théâtre, elle était presque parfaite : sauf qu'elle s'abandonnait à des mouvements de couplage semi-explicites, ce qui nuisait aux valeurs esthétiques des pas de deux masculins et pas de trois exécutés par Dominic Coffey, Amar Bains et Mithun Gill. L'œuvre manque d'une approche dramaturgique plus profonde, c'est-à-dire d'un véritable développement des personnages et de l'histoire, et non seulement d'une incursion dans les goûts et pratiques sexuelles interculturelles. Le mouvement de démarche et la chorégraphie de Jaivant Patel étaient charmants et variés : offrant de nombreuses occasions aux interprètes de se pavener. Soutenu par un paysage sonore intéressant du compositeur Alap Desai et une excellente conception d'éclairage par K.J Lighting. Espérons que les futurs représentants feront preuve d'un progrès dramaturgique positif et accueillantes.
